The Musasa Dukunde Kawa cooperative has four washing stations located in the wild region of Northwestern Rwanda. The revolutionary PEARL program, which the cooperative has benefited from, has shifted the focus to Rwandan coffee. While the emphasis used to be on quantity, there has been a growing emphasis on the quality of production, opening up Rwanda to the specialty coffee market with highly appreciated harvests. The cherries are hand-picked only when fully ripe and then depulped on the same evening using a mechanical depulper. In addition to the cooperative’s excellent work in improving and ensuring quality, various social programs have also been created that greatly contribute to the livelihood of their members. Coverage of school fees and medical insurance is provided along with training on quality and productivity in coffee cultivation. The coffee exhibits distinct notes of chamomile, blueberry, and rose.
