Santa Bárbara Estate is a family-run business that employs about 60 people throughout the year, who earn on average 30% more than the minimum wage. Half of them also receive free housing within the farm for themselves and their families. Santa Bárbara Estate also manages a comprehensive scholarship and financial aid program for the children of workers, as well as assisting long-term employees in acquiring their own plot of land. The Gesha variety was imported from a farm in Nariño, run by the Lasso family. These seeds originated in Panama. Now, the small plot of land at Finca La Palma successfully produces exceptional quality Gesha. The long-term goal is to make Gesha more accessible to all markets so that more people can afford to taste this superb botanical variety. The coffee exhibits distinct notes of apricot, jasmine, and peach.
